What to Consider when Buying
a new Air Conditioning Unit

How to make sure you buy the right air conditioning system for your home

Purchasing a new air conditioner for your home or replacing an old one can be a substantial investment and that's why we want to make sure you not only make the right decision on what you're going to buy, but also that you get the most bang for your buck.

So, to start, let's list out the various things you'll want to consider:

  1. Equipment Manufacturer
  2. BTU/h or tonnage on the A/C system
  3. Efficiency rating
  4. Installing contractor

How to choose which equipment manufacturer is right for you

This generally comes down to which contractor you decide to work with and whether they specialize in installations or not. There are various top-tier brands like Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Fujitsu, and York, all of which generally come with lower-tier brands made by the same manufacturing plants.

Each of the top tier brands will come with more bells and whistles, have slightly higher quality components, and will be made a little more robust - BUT, the saying in HVAC trade is that the A/C unit is only as good as the contractor who installed it.

So, if you're going to go for any of the top-tier brands, please make sure that you check their references. The reason I say this is because we've installed lower-tier brands like Ducane and Bryant that have been running without issue for over ten years, so when it comes to the decision of which A/C manufacturer to choose our recommendation would be to find the contractor that's right for you and then install the brand that they sell.

A good contractor will walk you through the pros and cons of their higher-tier and lower-tier brands and help you to make the best decision for your needs.

What size AC system do you need?

This is not something that can just be stated over a short paragraph like this, but I will say that there are rules of thumb that will work as a good starting point for your search. The general rule of thumb is 0.5 tons per 400 sqft, so if you have a 2,000 square foot home, then you'll start your search by looking for 2.5 ton A/C units.

The reason this is a rule of thumb and not an absolute is because sizing an A/C system takes into account the quantity and age of your windows, the quality of your home's insulation, how many CFM your furnace has, and whether the ductwork on your furnace can handle the size of newer and more efficient evaporator coils.

As you can see, there are a lot of variables when it comes to sizing a new air conditioning system. The best way to find out exactly what you need is to get a contractor to calculate it based on the various factors that will relate to the heat load...even things like the colour of your roof will affect what size of the AC system you need.

Why do you want a high efficient AC system?

Efficiency ratings are there to tell you how much of the electricity your system uses is converted to cooling your home. Air conditioners do multiple things to cool your home, they absorb heat into the refrigerant from the inside air and then pump the refrigerant to the outside unit where the condensing unit can then discharge the heat outside. When we talk about efficiency, we talk about how well your system can do this with the components it has.

Here's an example; if you want to boil a large pot of water, do you put the pot on a small element or a large one?

You obviously put it on the large one because it would be more efficient at transferring heat into the large pot of water, well condensers and evaporator work the same way, the larger they are, the more heat they can absorb and discharge - so long as the compressor and expansion valve are designed to work with them.

The point I'm trying to make is, not only does a high-efficiency unit have to run for shorter amounts of time, but they also save you money on energy bills because they are better at cooling your home than less efficient units. What you have to do is look at how much money you'll save by installing a high-efficiency unit and decide if the savings are worth the added expense. The calculator below can help you to make that decision on whether a new air conditioning installation will reduce your energy costs to justify a new AC.

How to make sure you buy the right air conditioning system for your home

Well isn't it obvious...kidding :) But, to be serious, it all comes down to who you trust will not only get the job done for a fair price but also one that will stand behind their work.

At the end of the day, most contractors want to have customers for 30 years or more, and if they want that loyal of a customer, then they better treat them right.

So, when it comes to choosing a contractor, don't just choose us because you're here reading this, call at least two other contractors, meet with them either over the phone, or preferably in person, and then listen to your gut.

Either way, if you choose us or not, we will always be happy to help you out or provide a second opinion.

I hope this helps you to make a confident and informed decision, but if you're still not sure what to do, simply give us a call!
