How to Safely Clean Your Own Condenser Coil

Turn off the power

Before starting any maintenance, ensure your safety by turning off the power to your air conditioning unit. Locate the exterior shut-off box near the unit and flip the switch to the off position. This step prevents any electrical hazards while you're working on the condenser coil.

Low pressure rinse

Gently rinse the condenser coil with a low-pressure hose to remove dirt, debris, and leaves. Avoid using high pressure, as it can bend or damage the fins. Best practice is to spray from the inside out, ensuring all the grime is washed away without harming the delicate parts.

Turn the power back on

Once the coil is clean and dry, it's safe to restore power to your air conditioning unit. Return to the exterior shut-off box and flip the switch back to the on position. Allow the system a few minutes to restart and begin cooling your home efficiently once again.

Frequently Asked Air Conditioning Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Your AC system is designed to absorb heat from the inside of your home and discharge it outside. If you have anything restricting airflow through either your evaporator (indoor unit) or your condenser (outdoor unit), then the system either won't be able to absorb heat or discharge heat as it needs to.

How do you unfreeze an air conditioner?

Turn your HVAC system off, but keep the furnace fan running for 24 hours. Change your air filter, clean your condenser coil, and make sure that all of your return air vents are clear and not blocked by anything. Check out this article from our friends at Air and Energy of NWFL

How much does it cost to replace an outside AC unit?

The condenser unit, or outside AC unit, will only need to be replaced if it has significant physical damage to the coil or if the unit is ancient and the compressor has failed.

The standard practice is to change out the entire system so that the evaporator and condenser are matched. If they are not matched, the system will not operate effectively.

What would cause my central air unit to stop working?

The most common failure for air conditioning systems is the lack of airflow. Try changing your air filter and cleaning the outdoor condenser coil with a garden hose.

What causes AC to freeze in summer?

AC coils usually freeze because of a lack of airflow. Change your filter and let the system sit for 24 hours with the furnace fan running.

How much does it cost to fix the air conditioner?

Repairing an air conditioner could cost as little as $79.00, but that's if no parts or materials are needed and if the repair can be made within the first hour and a half. If more time or parts are required, the price could range from $200 to $2000.

How do you know if your AC needs freon?

The simple answer to this is because a licensed air conditioning specialist tells you that it needs more refrigerant. The telltale sign that it needs more refrigerant, though, is when the system continues to run but doesn't cool your space.

ALERT: it is illegal for a contractor to "top-off" your system with refrigerant without repairing the leak and confirming that the repair meets regulations.

How much does it cost to put Freon in a central air unit?

Freon is sold by the pound, and the cost depends on which refrigerant is needed. Some refrigerants become more expensive as time goes by because they become de-regulated and the supply gets limited. For accurate up to date pricing, please call or email us.

How do you tell if your AC is broken?

Noises, clangs, and bangs can be a telltale sign that your system is busted. Also, if it continues to run but doesn't cool your house, you may have a system failure.

How do I reset my air conditioning unit?

Resetting your AC system is never recommended, but you can do it but turning the power to your furnace and your AC off, letting the system sit off for 24 hours and then turning the power back on. We'd be happy to answer questions, so give us a call.

How do you troubleshoot an air conditioner?

An air conditioning systems need a few things to operate effectively; power, refrigerant flow, and airflow. If your system has power, the fan is running, and the outdoor compressor and condenser are running, then you most likely have an issue with refrigerant levels or heat transfer.

Do air conditioning units have a reset button?

No, AC systems do not have a reset button or switch. When air conditioning systems stop working, it could be because a limit switch or safety control has tripped. This happens to protect the unit from catastrophic failure.

How long does it take AC to thaw?

We always recommend leaving your furnace fan run for 24 hours to ensure that your AC coil is completely thawed. Also, make sure to change your air filter before turning your AC system back on.

Where can I get an A/C capacitor?

First off, you shouldn't be changing your AC capacitor yourself. But, if you're deadset on doing it then you need to know the microfarad rating (usually 35/5 to 55/5). Now you'll need to find a capacitor, and you need to find the right one and the easiest way to do that is to text an image of yours to (778) 608-0486 and we'll tell you what you need and where to get it.
